About The Park

Surrounding Delaware’s largest freshwater pond, Lums Pond State Park offers a variety of recreational activities and habitats! From woodlands to wetlands, visitors can enjoy paddlesports, athletics fields, equestrian trails, camping, educational programming and high flying adventure.
  • Park History

Once home to vibrant Native American communities which thrived on the waters of the St. Georges Creek, Lums Pond was created in the early 1700s when the creek was dammed to support local milling operations. During the construction of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal in the earlier 1800s, the canal company purchased the pond and surrounding area to support a lock in the area of Summit North Marina and continue the canal across Delaware to the river. Finally, the state acquired the area to preserve for outdoor recreation in 1963 as New Castle County’s population boomed.

  • Summit North Marina

Located within Lums Pond State Park, Summit North Marina offers access to both the Chesapeake Bay to the west and the Delaware River and Atlantic Ocean to the east via the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. Full-service amenities and entertainment await!

  • Lums Pond Woods Nature Preserve

Located within the park, the Lums Pond Woods Nature Preserve is a great example of a Northern Coastal Plain/Piedmont Basic Mesic hardwood Forest. Delmarva Bays are scattered throughout the forest. This Nature Preserve captures all the mature woodlands within the Park and is accessible via the Little Jersey and Whale Whallow Loop trails.

Don’t Bring Firewood

Help us protect our trees by preventing the spread of harmful insect pests to Delaware’s parks and forests. Due to recent quarantines and threats of invasive insects that are detrimental to Delaware’s agriculture, outside firewood is no longer permitted in Delaware State Park campgrounds. Firewood is available for purchase at all State Park campgrounds.

Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) is an invasive insect that is dangerous and destructive to the agriculture, horticulture and forests in the State of Delaware and surrounding states. Specific targets of this insect are grapevines, fruit trees, hops and trees. The SLF will lay eggs on any flat surface such as tree trunks, vehicles, boats, grills, bicycles, and coolers, so they can be easily transported. The Delaware Department of Agriculture has quarantined eleven zip code areas in Delaware to eradicate, control, and prevent the spread of SLF in Delaware and to surrounding states. Thirteen counties in southeastern Pennsylvania and Mercer, Warren and Hunterdon Counties in New Jersey also have quarantine requirements. If you live or will travel through these counties on your way to camp in Delaware State Parks please check with your state agriculture department for specific quarantine regulations.

Several other invasive insects may be spread by transporting firewood. Emerald Ash Borer, Asian Longhorn Beetle, Southern Bark Beetle and Sirex Wood Wasp all pose a serious threat to native trees and forest ecosystems. You can protect our valuable forest resources by not transporting firewood.

The most effective way that campers can help stop the spread of these invasive insects is to check your vehicles and gear for SLF egg masses and to refrain from transporting wood, including firewood. When you travel to a campground, use the firewood that is sold there to prevent the spread of these destructive insects.

For more information, visit the Delaware Department of Agriculture website: Agriculture.delaware.gov or de.gov/hitchhikerbug.

The refund will be applied by the same instrument by which payment was made (i.e. credit card payments will receive a credit using the same credit card. Checks and money orders will receive a check refund.) Refunds by check require a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks for delivery. The Request for Refund procedures must be followed for refunds made by check.

Customers may not cancel a reservation and rebook the stay for the same dates in order to receive a promotional discount.

Designated officials in each park and specified Dover staff may authorize a complete refund in case of emergency or early departure.
