Boatspotting on the Delaware

Near one of the busiest ports on the east coast, visitors to Fox Point are at the hub of transportation and shipping in our state. View enormous cargo ships passing by the park and try to simultaneously spot three states from the trail – Pennsylvania to the north (look for the Commodore Barry bridge), New Jersey to the east and Delaware beneath your feet!

Enjoy the Playground

A community-favorite playground, pack some snacks and head out to the multi-age, multi-structure playground overlooking the river. Your boat and train enthusiasts will get a double-dose of fun!

Picnic or Rent the Pavilion

Enjoy scenic views as you picnic in the park, or rent one of the park’s popular pavilions for your event or gathering.

Walk the Riverview Trail

Hike or bike this paved, accessible path that offers views of the trains and ships passing by. Look for birds and butterflies in the meadow as you walk.

About the Park

Perched on the banks of the mighty Delaware River, Fox Point State Park is where nature and commerce come together. Because of the park’s location along the main hub for shipping at the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia, visitors can spot cargo ships, freight trains and semi-trucks moving goods to market while also enjoying the robust wildlife thriving along the river. Trails, pavilions and playgrounds make this unique park a community favorite!

Park History

At one time, the thriving Pennsylvania Railroad began filling the bank of the Delaware River at what is now Fox Point to create additional industrial lands for their expansion. In 1958, environmentalist S. Marston Fox began a battle to stop the filling process and turn the four-mile stretch of shoreline over to the people of Delaware to protect local ecosystems and waterways. After decades of persistence, the land was turned over to the state in 1990 – 8 years after Fox’s death.

However, the past dumping practices had severely contaminated the soil of the site. To be safely used as a park without endangering the health of the public, the site was remediated using a cap system and is now enjoyed as Fox envisioned. The park is named in his honor.

The paved trail is suitable for hikers, bikers, strollers, and rollers. Trail users can view tugboats, freighters, and tankers on the busy Delaware River while traveling along a gentle grade on a paved path. Wayside exhibits offer educational stops.
